Who Still Uses Message Boards?Thursday, Jul. 19, 2007 By BILL TANCER

So, there we have it!

Web 2.0 is a revolution!

Web 1.0 is considered to be the ‘old news’.

The demographics of people who use the internet/Web have also changed – from the 90’s ‘computer nerds’ to the AKA yuppies/entrepreneur of today.

Though the article does not mention all the latest programs that we could use in a classroom situation or what programs are being replaced from the desk-top computer… it still made news to inform people the winds of change.

The sites he lists are some programs that may or may not hit Australia. We will have to keep an eye out to see how ideal they are and if they will benefit our need to communicate and transport information.

Web 2.0 is a connecting and informing many people. It’s a new revolution that can be accessible to everyone. All you need to do is give it time

Well – What is Web 2.0?

*Google*

*Google*

Introduction:

This program is definitive of Web 2.0 – it started as a basic Web 1.0 information search engine and over the last couple of years people were able to look for images as well as information. Today there is a list of things this program can do. It is making money though adverting companies.

With Web 2.0, it has move from a searching program (Web 1.0), to having the ability to store information and link with other programs and people. Most of the programs are easy to use and there are many programs for all purposes of Web 2.0!

Critique:

-          Advantage

o   You can use this program for all internet and Web 2.0 programs possible

o   It is easily accessible o   Its freeo   There are stick privacies

o   There are many programs are all amazingly useful

-          Disadvantage

o   You must have the internet

o   If you are new the World Wide Web, it is advisable you have someone teach you or you can send your own hours figuring it out

o   Too many things to join!

o   There are groups with the programs which can become overwhelming

o   Because there are companies that are paying their way to reach our screens, we have to look at the credibility

How can it be used?

The men from Google had an idea of having a search engine – then elaborated on the idea of having people work on the ‘free-Web’. They have created or own an extensive range of products:

·         ‘G-mail’ – E-mail access

·         ‘Blogger’ – blog page

·         Google and Google Scholar search engine (images and information)

·         View the news, have an e-mailing alarming system

·         Have information sent to your mobile

·         Chat to people

·         Store work documents and files

·         Etc… visit http://www.google.com.au/intl/en/options/ to see them all

·         They also own the rights to YouTube

o   In itself you can create your own account for viewing, storing and uploading videos clips

o   You can write about them in comment space on the blogs

What particular class would benefit from it?

ALL KLA’s – particularly the computer science classes

How have I used it in the past?

I have G-mail, Blogger and store information on the Document and spreads

I have viewed how the programs such as Google scholar and YouTube can benefit my assignment and personal researches.

How will I use it from now on?With my numerous subscriptions I can keep further in touch with the other studying ND students. Also I may come to a stage where i may take advantage of the extra programs that are available for easy accessibility of information.

WEB 2.0

web2-big-7450972.jpghere is an interesting image… its programed :)

Shift Happens

Now for something different! – this is a post i have on my Facebook – for education purposes :P

Facebook/Myspace

Facebook/Myspace

Introduction: <WARNING> In the light of the given programs, I’m writing about, this blog will be more colloquial than usual. The symbols used are indeed not academic, but are rhetoric for the programs.

Fun Fun Fun – Forget Bebo – that was child’s play – being a university student, come young adult, it is Rites of Passage that we forget about the juvenile programs and log-on to better and upgraded programs

But with reason ;)

You can use interactive and entertaining learning to your advantage! From the world of buying our own webpage and adding whatever you like (i.e: photo’s, opinions, write about your friends and what you like and hate) these free webpages allow anyone and everyone to create their own page and make it as individualistic as possible!

Critique:

-          Advantage

o   The ability to connect and keep connected with a network is easy J

o   Dose not cost anything to join. J

o   It makes group work fun J

o   It shows the importance of networking, group work, trust and

-          Disadvantage

o   Could add to things that students procrastinate with :/

o   If it is used incorrectly there could be cases of bullying or rudeness x(

o   There is also the idea of the dangers of putting  x(

o   They can be confusing to use first hand. It is better that someone teaches you how to use the features :S

How can it be used?

The first step is to sign-up to the programs.  Have someone teach you have to use the features. Add people to begin your network

If anything in a future classroom I may use Facebook and create a completely different profile (to differentiate my personal and teaching life). Then have a private group set up for the students and I to collaboratively share ideas and learing via the net.

I will not use MySpace because it is too unprofessional.

What particular class would benefit from it?

The Business and Computing Faculty will appreciate these websites. They teach the students of the forms of communicating and networking.

For a business studies class, they can look at ‘groups’ in Facebook and see the demographics of the people who join the groups.  I.E: people who will join the Canterbury Bulldogs group compared to Max Brenner Appreciation Society.

In MySpace, the students could look at the Musician’s (http://www.myspace.com/u2 ), politician (http://profile.myspace.com/officiallaborspace )or a Business’s ‘page’ and see how they subliminally advertise. One example is : http://www.myspace.com/iamfruity This is an actual fruit company getting their name out to the youth. >.<

There are many more KLA faculties that could benefit from these programs too.

How have I used it in the past?

I have used it as a social networking tool.

How will i use it from now on?

Not only fun aspects of connecting with friends, but also collaborating ideas on our own ED2203 group. It is a great way to share ideas and information for a select group to see.

Look me up on  FaceBookor MySpace

Blogger/WordPress

Blogger/WordPress

Introduction:

With Web 1.0 the closest programs you could see are the Spam mail or personal Webpages people created to get their information read.  With Web 2.0 people are able to have numerous and free pages and be able to write whatever they like. With these two particular programs

WordPress has a specific background to fit your virtual style. But, if you have a specific purpose to use their programs, you have to comply with the options they give you.

Blogger has limited options, so t

Critique:

-          Advantage o   People are able to post whatever they like and not pay for it

o   It saves e-mailing everything; this time people can just logon and download

o   It has good security

o   The comply with other computer programs and software

-          Disadvantage

o   People can take this too face and are at risk of offending people

o   You can’t chose the background that you would like because they are program based

o    You cannot be too original with the layout because the options are limited

How can it be used?

Exactly like now! Post information on this site for people to see, read and possibly some may down load so of the information. Forget having to send spam mail to all your friends or buy a webpage to be seen. Blog pages are free programs that can revolutionise the turnover or information.

I use Blogger for my class work, WordPress for individual the assignment, and PBWiki for the group task

What particular class would benefit from it?

All KLA’s!

How have I used it in the past?

Not these particular programs, but i have posted a blog on Facebook and MySpace

How will I use it from now on?

If i find myself in a group work activity/assignment i’ll post the final work on a blog for the group to see. They will be able copy it and add it to my section

 Concluding comment:

Blogger is a better program for personal blogs where people to read them and for the owner to continuously update.  Look me up: http://berniebou.blogspot.com/

WordPress is a program that is more professional and would be better for a formal and academic situation. With the new world of Web 2.0 it will make information easier to up-load and access.

Del.isio.us

Del.isio.us

Introduction:  once you get to know this program, it is not hard and becomes beneficial.

At first it is rather annoying to set it up. If you have a ‘VISTER’ computer it constantly reminds you of the dangers of downloading. Nervous computer user you wouldn’t want to use this program because of the ‘possibilities’ of anything happening to their computer.

I recommend a good ‘Antivirus’ program before you sign up to this program (or any other computer program for that matters)

The aim of this program is to store you ‘favourite’ links. The way a person could to this is possibly storing the web links on a ‘Word-Document’, writing them on paper or even e-mailing them.

This Web 2.0 program becomes downloaded to the computer or you can logon to access the files. How this differs from Web 1.0 is that in the past people had only the option to save their link on the computer (if they had Microsoft programs). This program is not only about searching and finding links, but is about adding and giving people access to see the information you have stored.

Critique:

-     Advantage:

o   The links are easily accessible on the web

o   If you are computer savvy this will save time for researching on the net o   It is public so everyone is able to access the page

-          Disadvantage:

o   Not all computers will be able to download it to its full capacity

o   If you are not computer savvy, you may have to take time out to figure out how to use the program

o   It is a public – there is a security policy, but it does not stop people looking through the information you post. A person has to be careful in what they post, because it is easily accessible

How can it be used?

Example:

A music teacher can asks their students to find out the origins of the song “twinkle, twinkle, little star”. Because the teacher wants to direct them to a specific webpage they can direct the students to visit this link http://del.icio.us/berniebou. Then go to title Lyrics and Music to find the story behind the child’s poem.

This saved the teacher time: printing, handing out the sheets and explain what has to be done with the paper. All the teacher will have to do now is write the link on the board (or e-mail it to them). Have a given task for the particular lesson and assess their learning after the activity is complete.

What particular class would benefit from it?

Research KLA’s such as History, R.E, Geography, Legal Studies, Business studies… many, if not all KLA’s

How have I used it in the past?

I have not used this program in the past.

How will I use it from now on?

Though I had troubles with it in the beginning, i will use it for my future assignment. I may also us it for my future classroom activities.

Fliker

Flickr

Introduction: why do i need Flickr if i have a ‘Ringo’?

They were created with the intention of being a Web 2.0 program. They are not programs  that you just look through to find scholarly information for any particular subject. The purpose of Fliker is to upload and store images. Recently they have moved an extra step to make it a form of netwroking

Ringo

Fliker

-          A photo storage site.

-          You look at yours, your friends, others who have made it public.

-          If you fill in your profile, your friends will be sent an e-mail in regards of your birthday is coming up.

-          Ringo is more personal where as it asks you for your details

-          There are 2 ways for a person to leave a comment on Ringo; under the pictures and on the person’s profile

-          Also a photo storage site

-          Not only could you give  permission for your friends to view your pictures: you have the options of joining ‘Groups’ who share your interests

-          You can map your photos!

-          There are 4 settings for the layout of your pictures.

-          Flicker could be seen as its upgrade to Ringo – you have the ability to edit the pictures.

-          Flicker has the ability to be a blog page too.

All up they are both useful program. Fliker, in its own case, is an upgrade because it takes extra steps is a form of Blog page that specialises in images. It

Critique:

-          Advantage

o   Students can store images and access them anywhere

o   It is compatible with other software and free internet programs

o   It greets you in a different language each time you log on

o   The gadgets are what make this page fascinating. You have the ability to join groups, create a blog, have other people join your network a map the photos

o   It will make the creative side of group work a whole lot more fun because it is more easier to connect with people

-          Disadvantage

o   when you download the images the quality is reduced

o   the page looks to bland, so it is not as individualistic as students will like it to be

o   privacy is an option – not a given like other programs

o   The program will seem redundant if you do have or do not want to post images on the world wide web

o   Mapping your images may take while and unless you can read a map well, you may find it hard to use this program

o   Looks less professional than other photo storage programs i.e: Ringo

How can it be used?

-          Store images for assignments

-          Students can collaboratively  share and send each other their ULR links to access the photos

-          Ease for group assignemts

What particular class would benefit from it?

Mainly Art and Drama classes. Like every other KLA it depends how artistic the teacher will want the students to be to benefit using the program

How have i used it in the past?

I have not used this program in the past.

How will i use it from now on?

I shall post my pictures that are strictly business related. Fliker is a great way to connect and use the up-grades of Web 2.0. Because I already have this program and it is easily accessable I will use it to its potential and add more people I know to have a stronger network

If you are connected to this program, look me up under the name of ‘Bernie Bou’. Or click the following link to preview 4 image:

NEW NEW NEW

Page one:“AHHHH!!!!I have too many of these things!!!”

These are the words uttered by all the students who have enrolled to the unit ED2203!

Being a part of the ‘tweenager’ (teenager turning 20) stage in life, it is almost impossible that us students have not been part of the revolutionary Web 2.0.

Throughout the  turn of the 21st Century it has become apparent that Web 1 is slowly dying while it had only become a new revolution.

I can still remember getting my very first e-mail address; then realising i am able to ‘chat’ (on the spot) with my family from overseas. It was the re-birth of the internet for me. With Web 1.0 – i irregularly used the computer and the internet to complete my assignment; they were printed and submitted the next day. NOW i have logged on to Web 2.0 were i am now able to create, post, edit, and individualise submit my assignments within the same day (and not use a bit of paper!). Honestly – this is done whilst i’m ‘keeping in touch’ with friends – i.e: using the listed programs to have fun and research…

In regards to Student of ED2203 having “too many of these things” you will read WHY that is.

The next 5 posts will consist of the programs that either i already had, or recently signed up with.

The method of my articles will be:

Introduction:

Critique:

- Advantage

- Disadvantage

How can it be used?

What particular class would benefit from it?

How have i used it in the past?

How will i use it from now on?

I hope you enjoy reading my posts. The main aim of this is to show you that I am a real product of the 21st Century – connections and networking made easy via computer software. REMEMBER!! Like good historians THIS IS MY OPINION!

Cheers,

Bernadette!

This is what firends look like these days when technology kicks in! (these images are uploded to WordPress and are purposly hyperlinked to revile a suprise!)
