Facebook/Myspace
Introduction: <WARNING> In the light of the given programs, I’m writing about, this blog will be more colloquial than usual. The symbols used are indeed not academic, but are rhetoric for the programs.
Fun Fun Fun – Forget Bebo – that was child’s play – being a university student, come young adult, it is Rites of Passage that we forget about the juvenile programs and log-on to better and upgraded programs
But with reason
You can use interactive and entertaining learning to your advantage! From the world of buying our own webpage and adding whatever you like (i.e: photo’s, opinions, write about your friends and what you like and hate) these free webpages allow anyone and everyone to create their own page and make it as individualistic as possible!
Critique:
- Advantage
o The ability to connect and keep connected with a network is easy J
o Dose not cost anything to join. J
o It makes group work fun J
o It shows the importance of networking, group work, trust and
- Disadvantage
o Could add to things that students procrastinate with :/
o If it is used incorrectly there could be cases of bullying or rudeness x(
o There is also the idea of the dangers of putting x(
o They can be confusing to use first hand. It is better that someone teaches you how to use the features :S
How can it be used?
The first step is to sign-up to the programs. Have someone teach you have to use the features. Add people to begin your network
If anything in a future classroom I may use Facebook and create a completely different profile (to differentiate my personal and teaching life). Then have a private group set up for the students and I to collaboratively share ideas and learing via the net.
I will not use MySpace because it is too unprofessional.
What particular class would benefit from it?
The Business and Computing Faculty will appreciate these websites. They teach the students of the forms of communicating and networking.
For a business studies class, they can look at ‘groups’ in Facebook and see the demographics of the people who join the groups. I.E: people who will join the Canterbury Bulldogs group compared to Max Brenner Appreciation Society.
In MySpace, the students could look at the Musician’s (http://www.myspace.com/u2 ), politician (http://profile.myspace.com/officiallaborspace )or a Business’s ‘page’ and see how they subliminally advertise. One example is : http://www.myspace.com/iamfruity This is an actual fruit company getting their name out to the youth. >.<
There are many more KLA faculties that could benefit from these programs too.
How have I used it in the past?
I have used it as a social networking tool.
How will i use it from now on?
Not only fun aspects of connecting with friends, but also collaborating ideas on our own ED2203 group. It is a great way to share ideas and information for a select group to see.
Look me up on FaceBookor MySpace
